Doomsday Cartography (play
here) is tour through a city that is impenetrable to outsiders, with sounds and narration recorded by its inhabitants. It maps a world envisioned by military strategists and counter-insurgency theorists, who use fiction to advertise particular ideas of urban health and decay.
The project responds to research on counter-insurgency literature, fiction, and strategy, including the U.S. “Counter-Zombie Dominance” plan and cinematic descriptions of a future of crime and need in “Urban Future, the Emerging Complexity.” These military speculations use sociological theories and fiction to present doomsday scenarios.
Doomsday Cartography reinterprets these doomsday scenarios by drawing out their potential for new beginnings. Navigating military fiction and fact, the project subverts a militaristic view of doomsday with the perspective of a persona innovating to navigate it.
